Why NBEMS Announced This
The FMGE June 2026 exam produced a shock. The pass percentage was close to 12.77 percent, with only 4,635 out of 36,300 candidates passing. That was the lowest FMGE result since June 2023 and it landed hard on a community that already faces tough odds every session.
Foreign medical graduates reacted fast. The All FMGs Association and the Foreign Medical Students' Wing of AIMSA, known as AIMSA-FMSW, organized two demonstrations: one outside the NBEMS office on July 10 and a larger one at Jantar Mantar on August 3. NBEMS responded by forming a review committee. That committee reported back in late August and NBEMS then announced both the October exam and a set of reforms. AIMSA-FMSW called off its protest soon after.

What Else NBEMS Announced
NBEMS paired the October exam news with several structural reforms, part of a broader push toward FMGE difficulty level reforms and transparency:
- Difficulty split: future papers will carry 30 percent easy, 50 percent moderate and 20 percent difficult questions. Half the paper still stays moderate and a fifth stays hard, so this is a rebalancing, not an easy pass
- FMGE fee reduction: the exam fee will drop starting with the next session
- FMGE response sheet transparency: candidates will see their question IDs, the correct answers and the marks awarded for each question
- Grievance committee: it will now include a representative of foreign medical graduates
- Centre facilities: NBEMS said it will work to improve conditions at exam centres, after candidates in June 2026 reported poor ventilation and heat during the test
Who Is Eligible for the October 2026 Exam
Standard FMGE eligibility for OCI and Indian citizens carries over to this exam. You need to be an Indian citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India and you need a primary medical qualification, MBBS or its equivalent, from a university outside India that the relevant Indian embassy recognizes.
What NBEMS has not confirmed is whether October 31 is open to every eligible candidate, or limited to a specific group, such as those who already sat the June 2026 exam.
