amc-clinical-exam

The AMC Clinical Exam is the practical skills test every International Medical Graduate must pass to register as a doctor in Australia. It sits inside the AMC Standard Pathway, right after you clear the AMC CAT MCQ. The exam runs across 20 stations: 16 hold a real clinical task and you need a pass in 9 of the 14 scored stations to succeed. Fees currently sit at AUD $3,000 for the in-person sitting in Melbourne and AUD $3,400 for the online version. Only 21 to 24 percent of candidates pass on a given attempt. This guide breaks down the format, the scoring system, the case types and what it actually takes to prepare for the AMC Clinical Examination in 2026.

AMC Clinical Exam Eligibility

Before you can book the AMC Clinical Exam, two boxes need ticking. You must have passed the AMC CAT MCQ exam. You also need to clear an approved English proficiency test. Without both, the AMC will not open slot booking for you. These two steps come first for a reason: the MCQ checks your theory and the Clinical Exam checks whether you can use that theory on a real patient in real time.

Why the AMC Clinical Exam Matters

Passing the AMC Clinical Exam is not optional if you are on the Standard Pathway. It is the mandatory step for your AHPRA license. Most International Medical Graduates land their first Australian hospital job only after clearing this exam. A small number get through via PESCI and the Workplace-Based Assessment route instead, but that path depends on securing a hospital job first, which makes it far less predictable. For most IMGs, the Clinical Exam is the direct road to registration.

AMC Clinical Exam Format & Structure

The AMC Clinical Exam format follows a strict, timed structure across 20 stations.

Component Detail
Total stations 20
Rest stations 4
Pilot stations (unscored) 2
Scored stations 14
Stations needed to pass 9 of 14
Reading time per station 2 minutes
Interaction time per station 8 minutes

Sixteen of these stations hold a live clinical task. Four are rest stations, with no patient and no examiner, spaced through the day to give you a mental break. Two of the sixteen are pilot stations the AMC uses to trial new cases. They do not count toward your score, but you cannot tell them apart from the ones that do.

Walk into the exam hall in Melbourne and you will see a long row of cabins on each side. Each cabin holds a simulated patient and an examiner. A screen outside gives you the case background: two minutes to read it, then eight minutes inside to take a history, examine the patient, reach a diagnosis and present your findings before the bell rings.

AMC Clinical Exam Scoring System

Every station gets marked on a 7-point scale, not a simple pass or fail tick.

Score Meaning
1 to 3 Unsatisfactory performance, unsafe practice, or missed red flags
4 Pass - the minimum standard expected of a newly qualified Australian intern
5 to 7 Good to superior clinical fluency and communication

Examiners rate you across these parameters at each station:

  • History taking
  • Diagnosis and differential diagnoses
  • Management plan
  • Approach to the patient or relative
  • Patient counselling and education
  • Choice and technique of examination
  • Accuracy of examination

The scoring does not average out. A brilliant score on one station cannot rescue a failed one. Nine of your fourteen scored stations need to hit that 4 or above, station by station, on their own merit.

Types of Cases Assessed in AMC Clinical Examination

The AMC Clinical Exam cases pull from routine clinic and hospital presentations, with a handful of less common scenarios mixed in to test how you handle the unexpected.

Case Specialty Skill Tested
Abdominal pain Surgery / ED History-taking, differential diagnosis
Limping child (hip) Paediatrics History and hip examination
Adult health check General Practice History and counselling
Rheumatoid arthritis, hand or joint Medicine Physical examination
Knee examination Orthopaedics Physical examination
Warfarin and anticoagulation counselling Medicine Patient counselling
Postnatal depression Psychiatry / O&G History and risk assessment

What Examiners Expect From You

Clinical knowledge matters, but it is not the only thing on trial. Examiners want to see you act like a junior doctor already working inside an Australian hospital. That means empathy, clear communication and a calm approach to the patient in front of you. You will find a patient and an examiner at 16 of the 20 stations and since pilot and scored stations look identical, treating any single station as less important is a mistake. Full effort, every station, is the only safe strategy.

AMC Clinical Exam Slot Booking & Exam Schedule

The AMC does not release AMC Clinical Exam Australia slots on a fixed monthly cycle. In practice, expect two to three scheduling releases a year, each covering several months of exam dates.

Scheduling Release Exam Months Covered
November 2025 February - April 2026
February 2026 May - August 2026
August 2026 (expected) September - December 2026
Slots open and candidates rush to book before they fill. If you miss the window, you can submit an Expression of Interest and the AMC may offer you a slot if one becomes available. In-person sittings run from March through December, with a limited number of online sittings scheduled too.

Travel Planning to Australia

Most candidates travel to Australia on a Visitor visa, subclass 500, valid for three months. Melbourne hosts the clinical assessment and many candidates arrive one week to a month early to adjust their body clock before exam day. That head start is entirely a personal choice. The AMC does not require it.

Why Most IMGs Fail AMC Clinical Exam

The real AMC Clinical Exam pass rate sits between 21 and 24 percent, not the inflated numbers quoted elsewhere. Roughly three out of four candidates fail on any given attempt.

The reason usually is not clinical knowledge. Most candidates prepare with friends who are also sitting the exam and that peer group has no way to give an honest, qualified assessment. You end up believing you are ready because your study partner said so, not because a doctor who has actually passed the exam watched you and told you the truth. What actually fails candidates is a shaky patient approach, poor time management inside the eight-minute window and fear that clouds judgment under pressure.

The Real Cost of an Unprepared Attempt

A failed attempt costs more than the AUD $3,000 exam fee. Add travel and Melbourne housing and one failed sitting runs Rs.4 to 5 lakh in total. Beyond money, a failed attempt costs time and confidence and it pushes your registration timeline back by months. Getting it right on the first attempt matters more than most candidates realize going in.

How MOKSH Academy Makes You Ready

AMC Clinical Exam coaching at MOKSH Academy is built around the exact gap named above: real assessment from mentors who have already cleared the exam and now work inside the Australian healthcare system. Every mentor is a clinically qualified, working doctor, not a fellow aspirant guessing alongside you.

The AMC Clinical Exam course structure:

Feature Detail
Batch start New batch every month, rolling admission
Batch duration 3 months
Batch size 6 to 7 participants
Session duration 2.5 to 3 hours
Session frequency 4 to 5 times a week
Personal assessments per aspirant 50+
Clinical case discussions per batch 300+
Mentors per batch 5 to 6, across different subjects

This AMC Clinical Exam study plan replaces guesswork with structure. Small batches mean each aspirant gets real, personal feedback, not a lecture lost in a crowd. Every case discussion doubles as an AMC Clinical Exam mock test, run under the same time pressure and format you will face on exam day, with a qualified mentor watching and correcting your approach in real time. This is AMC Clinical Exam online coaching and AMC Clinical Exam training built for aspirants preparing from India, without the cost of relocating to Australia months early.

FAQs

You need a global rating of 4 or above on at least 9 of the 14 scored stations. Scores do not average across stations, so each one has to clear that bar on its own.

The AMC does not cap the number of attempts. Most candidates that continue taking the exam eventually pass the exam in the 1-3 attempts, but each attempt is an added cost and delay.
