In India there is one exam to take to practice medicine. India conducts a national level NEET PG exam for admission to PG medical courses. It is a yearly examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The result of this exam is required to gain admission in the MD, MS or PG Diploma course in the medical college of India. The NEET PG 2026 exam date is August 30, 2026. It is a computer-based test that is taken during one shift. The eligibility for taking the test is having MBBS degree or provisional pass certificate and being registered with NMC or State Medical Council. The details regarding the exam date, eligibility, exam pattern, counselling process and cut-off are provided here.

What Is NEET PG?

NEET PG is called the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduates. It is the single national-level exam for postgraduate medical admission in India. Before this exam existed, states ran their own separate entrance tests. Now, one test decides your rank for every medical college in the country. Your score sets your all-India rank, and that rank decides your seat, your college, and your specialty. The National Board of Examinations runs the exam under India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

NEET PG Eligibility Criteria

NEET PG eligibility rules depend on where you got your medical degree. Read the section that applies to you.

If you have done your MBBS in India:

  • A degree in MBBS from NMC is required.
  • The duration of 1 year rotatory internship is required to be completed by 30th September 2026.
  • The NMC/State Medical Council must issue a permanent or provisional registration certificate.
  • If you are already enrolled in a Medical Doctorate (MD / MS / DNB) course from any institute, you can not register for NEET PG. This will continue to be the rule until the course is finished or a student drops out of the course.

For Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs):

  • They must first pass Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE).
  • A valid registration certificate from NMC/State Medical Council is required.
  • Internship programme should be completed as per the deadline of the Indian graduates.
NEET PG Age Limit: No Age restriction for NEET PG.
No of Attempts: NEET PG can be attempted unlimited number of times.

NEET PG Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme

The exam runs as a computer-based test with 180 multiple-choice questions. You get 3 hours and 30 minutes to finish it. The paper splits into five sections, and each section runs on its own clock. You get 42 minutes per section. Once your time for a section runs out, the system locks it and moves you forward. You cannot go back and change an earlier answer.

The marking scheme is simple. A correct answer earns you 4 marks. A wrong answer costs you 1 mark. An unattempted question earns zero, with no penalty. NEET PG 2026 is conducted throughout a single shift so there is no score normalization. Your raw score decides your rank directly.

This sectional lock is the biggest change test-takers need to plan around. Practice with a strict, section-wise timer before exam day, not just full-length mocks.

NEET PG Syllabus

The NEET PG syllabus covers your full four-and-a-half-year MBBS curriculum, as set by the NMC's Graduate Medical Education Regulations. The syllabus splits into three groups: pre-clinical subjects, para-clinical subjects, and clinical subjects.

Section S. No. Subject Weightage
Part A 1 Anatomy 17
2 Physiology 17
3 Biochemistry 16
Part B 4 Pathology 25
5 Pharmacology 20
6 Microbiology 20
7 Forensic Medicine 10
8 Social and Preventive Medicine 25
Part C 9 General Medicine (Including Dermatology, Venereology & Psychiatry) 45
10 General Surgery (Including Orthopedics, Anesthesia, and Radiology) 45
11 Obstetrics and Gynecology 30
12 Paediatrics 10
13 ENT 10
14 Ophthalmology 10

General Medicine and General Surgery carry the highest weightage on this list. Pathology and Social and Preventive Medicine also pull a large share of marks. Build your study plan around these four subjects first, then move to the smaller-weightage ones once your base is solid.

NEET PG Exam Centre

Your NEET PG exam centre gets assigned to you through a city intimation slip, released before the admit card. NBEMS tries to place you close to your home city to cut down on travel. Log in with your credentials to check your allotted city and plan your travel early. On exam day, carry your admit card and a valid photo ID. Without both, the centre staff will not let you sit for the test.

NEET PG Cutoff

The NEET PG cutoff is not a fixed mark. It works on a qualifying percentile, and that percentile changes by category each year.

Category Qualifying Percentile
General / EWS 50th percentile
General-PwD 45th percentile
SC / ST / OBC 40th percentile

Clearing the cutoff does not guarantee you a seat. It only makes you eligible to register for counselling. Your actual seat depends on your all-India rank, your category, and the number of candidates ahead of you competing for the same course and college.

NEET PG Counselling

NEET PG counselling starts once results and the cutoff list are out. Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counselling for All India Quota seats. The state counselling is conducted by the respective state authorities for the State Quota seats. The process runs in rounds: registration, choice filling, seat allotment, and reporting. A mop-up round and a stray vacancy round follow if seats remain unfilled.

These documents will be required at counselling:

  • NEET PG rank card
  • A qualification of MBBS degree or provisional certificate
  • Internship completion certificate
  • To be registered with NMC/State Medical Council.
  • A valid photo ID

How to Prepare for NEET PG

NEET PG preparation is best done around the real structure of the exam, rather than only the syllabus.

NEET PG preparation

1

Study the high-weightage subjects first: Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, and Social and Preventive Medicine.

2

Take mock tests with a strict, section-wise timer. This trains you for the exam's locked five-section format.

3

Solve previous year question papers to spot repeat patterns.

4

Do more than 2 revisions before the exam date. Do not just read once and count it done.

5

Use the standard textbook and also MCQ bank together. This will better develop your understanding of concepts.

Are there any alternatives to NEET PG?

If you want to practice outside India, then yes there are other possibilities. USMLE, AMC and PLAB are some great options ahead. USMLE targets US Medical Licensing. AMC exam is for an Australian Medical License. And PLAB is for UK medical practice license. These are other alternatives and have their own pathways. If you are confused, book a FREE counselling session with MOKSH Academy to find your medical career path.
