FMGE is your gateway to Indian medicine

A nationwide exam administered twice a year in June and December by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) is the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or MCI screening test. The examination is intended for Indian citizens and Indian citizens living abroad who have earned a medical degree from a foreign college or university and wish to register either provisionally or permanently with the Medical Council of India (MCI). International medical graduates can become licensed to practice medicine in India by passing the FMG Exam.

Eligibility criteria for FMGE

  • Be an Indian citizen, regardless of your current location.
  • Have a medical degree validated by the Indian Embassy in the country where you obtained it.
  • Complete your medical degree by the application deadline.

Fee structure for the FMGE exam 

  1. Application Fee: Is a non-refundable fee paid when submitting your application form. For the December 2023 session, the application fee was INR 7,080. This fee is expected to remain the same for upcoming sessions unless officially announced otherwise by NBEMS.
  2. Examination Fee: This fee is paid after your application is approved and you are eligible to take the exam. The exact amount of the examination fee is not announced until closer to the exam date. However, it is typically around INR 5,000. The prices are subject to change at any time by NBEMS. About the FMGE exam:

  • The FMGE is a computer-based test (CBT) conducted by(NBEMS)  the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences.
  • It consists of 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) divided into Part A and Part B.
  • Divided into Pre-clinical and paraclinical (100 marks) and Clinical subjects (200 marks), the FMGE exam totals 300 marks.
  • To qualify, you need to score at least 150 marks (50%) out of 300.
  • A total of 2 hours and 30 minutes will be allotted to complete each part.
  • All questions carry equal marks.
  • There is no negative marking.
  • The medium of the exam is English.
  • You can use a scientific calculator during the exam

FMGE Registration:

  • Go to the National Board of Examinations' official website in Medical Sciences (NBEMS): https://www.natboard.edu.in/
  • Register by creating an account and providing the required information.
  • Pay the registration fee through the designated online methods.
  • After successful registration, access the application form.
  • Please fill it out carefully, providing accurate and complete details about yourself, your education, and your qualifications.
  • Upload scanned copies of all necessary documents,  which include your passport, degree certificate, validation certificate, and transcripts.
  • Submit your application well before the deadline to allow for document verification.
  • NBEMS will verify the authenticity of your documents and eligibility.
  • If any discrepancies arise, you may be required to submit additional documents or clarifications.
  • Once your application and documents are verified, Download the admit card from the NBEMS website.
  • Keep a safe printout of the same for the exam day.

Exam Day: Arrive Early at the exam center. Carry your admit card, a valid photo ID, and a scientific calculator (if permitted). Follow the exam day instructions carefully and maintain decorum throughout the test.

Results and Scorecard: The results of the FMGE are usually declared within a few weeks of the exam. You can access your scorecard by logging into your NBEMS account. https://nbe.edu.in/. A passing grade of at least 50% is necessary to pass the test. Before the exam, familiarise yourself with the material and exam format.
