A career gap under 2 years brings no penalty for DHA exam eligibility. A gap between 2 and 5 years requires supervised clinical training and CME/CPD credits before you can apply. A gap over 5 years disqualifies non-UAE nationals from applying at all, with no exceptions. UAE nationals get a longer window of 10 years. These rules come from the DHA Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR), confirmed current in the 2025 update. They apply to doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals who apply through DataFlow and the Sheryan portal.
What Counts as a Gap of Practice
The DHA calls this rule the Discontinuity of Practice, or gap of practice. It means a break in hands-on clinical work in your licensed field, counted after you finish your internship. Most people assume the clock starts on their last day treating a patient. It does not. The clock starts from your last license or registration date, or your last day of paid clinical employment, whichever applies to your case.
Some activities do not stop the clock and people often get this wrong:
- Volunteer work does not count as active practice
- Observerships do not count as active practice
- Teaching-only roles without clinical duties do not count as active practice
- Telehealth services do count as active practice and they keep your gap at zero
If you worked as a telehealth physician for the past three years instead of in a hospital, your gap of practice is still zero under DHA rules.
DHA Gap of Practice Requirements by Duration and Profession
The DHA sets exact requirements based on how long your gap runs and what profession you hold. Doctors and dentists face the highest credit requirements. Nurses need half that amount. Allied health professionals and pharmacists need a quarter of the physician requirement. The table below breaks this down.
| Gap Length |
Physicians/Dentists |

All training must happen at a DHA-recognized
Approved Practice Setting (APS). A hospital or clinic without this recognition will not satisfy the requirement, no matter how many hours you log there. Completing your CME/CPD credits and training does not skip the exam either. You still need to sit the
DHA exam and pass it, even with a valid exam equivalency exemption from another pathway.
What Happens If Your Gap Exceeds 5 Years
Non-UAE nationals with a gap past 5 years cannot apply for a DHA license under the current PQR. This limit does not bend for individual circumstances. No amount of extra CME/CPD credits or training months will change this outcome once you cross the line.
UAE nationals and Children of Emirati Women get more room, with a cutoff at 10 years instead of 5. One real exception exists for gap calculations: time spent on UAE mandatory national service does not count toward your gap, regardless of your nationality status.
You may find blog posts online claiming the DHA raised its gap limit to 3 years for everyone. This claim is wrong. The official PQR, checked against its April 2025 update, still applies the 2-year trigger for CME/CPD requirements and the 5-year cutoff for disqualification. Rely on the source document, not second-hand claims.
Documents That Prove or Justify a Career Gap
Your application needs two types of proof: evidence of when you last practiced and evidence explaining what happened during your gap.
To prove your last date of clinical practice, gather:
- An experience letter with exact start and end dates, your job title and department
- Your registration or professional license from your last country of practice, active or expired
- A Good Standing Certificate (GSC) issued within the last 6 months
To justify a gap over 2 years, gather:
- CME/CPD certificates that match your specialty, not generic courses
- A completion certificate from your clinical training at an APS-recognized facility
- For surgical specialties, a case logbook, since the DHA calculates your gap from your last logged operation rather than your last employment date
To submit for verification, gather:
- A DataFlow Primary Source Verification (PSV) report
- A passport copy and an updated CV
How to Regain DHA Eligibility After a Career Gap
Follow these steps in order. Skipping ahead, like sitting the exam before finishing your training hours, wastes both time and money.
1
Calculate your exact gap. Count from your last license or employment date to your planned application date, then match that figure against the table above.
2
Check your CME/CPD credit target. Your profession and gap bracket set the exact number you need.
3
Source credits tied to your specialty. Random courses will not count. A cardiologist needs cardiology-relevant CME, not general wellness training.
4
Complete supervised training at an APS facility. This must run for the full number of months your bracket requires.
5
Collect your documents. Pull together the experience letters, GSC and CME certificates listed above, then submit them through DataFlow PSV.
6
Sit and pass the DHA exam. Your CME/CPD work satisfies the gap requirement, but the exam is a separate, mandatory step.
7
Convert your eligibility letter to a license. Once you pass, you receive a DHA eligibility letter that stays valid for about one year, so activate it within that window.
If you never tracked your CME/CPD hours while you were away, ask your training providers for retroactive records instead of inventing documentation. A fabricated certificate that turns up in DataFlow verification can end in a permanent ban, which is a far worse outcome than a delayed application.
Special Cases That Affect the Gap Calculation
Surgical specialties work differently. The DHA measures your gap from the date of your last logged operation, not your last day of employment. Submit a case logbook to use this calculation, or your gap defaults back to the standard employment-based method.
Telehealth practice counts as active clinical work under current DHA rules. A physician who spent years in remote consultations, without setting foot in a clinic, can still show a gap of zero.
Transfers between UAE health authorities create a hidden risk. Say you quit your job to study for the DHA exam, then spend months applying to transfer your license to DOH or MOHAP. That gap between jobs can quietly cross the 2-year threshold before your transfer finishes, forcing extra CME/CPD work you never planned for.
