What is the USMLE?

For a medical license in the US, candidates must pass the three-part United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).

The USMLE evaluates a doctor's use of clinical scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and medical knowledge that are necessary for practicing medicine. It is necessary for M.D. graduates to get medical licensure in the United States, which is granted by both domestic and foreign medical schools.

Steps of USMLE

USMLE Step 1 8-hour test with a maximum of 280 questions broken up into seven 60-minute sections.
USMLE Step 2 CK 60-minute blocks make up the 9-hour exam, which has a maximum of 318 questions.
USMLE Step 3 Two-day exam, with :

  • Day 2 lasting 9 hours

USMLE Eligibility Requirement

  • Age: To apply for the US medical licensing exam, you need to be at least 18 years old.
  • Education: Your present or previous school must be a medical school recognized by the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  • ECFMG certification: Certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is required if you graduated from a medical school outside of the US or Canada.

Registration Process for USMLE exam

  1. Make an account: Create an account on the USMLE website at usmle.org.
  2. Complete the application: Fill out the online application by entering your demographic and personal details.
  3. Select your test: Choose the USMLE exam step (step 1, step 2 CK, or step 3) you wish to register for.
  4. Exam fee payment: Use a credit card or another approved form of payment to cover the necessary exam expenses.
  5. Send in your application: Examine your application, then submit it.
  6. You will be sent your scheduling permit.
  7. Make an appointment for your test: Make an appointment with Prometric for your exam using the Scheduling permit.

Medical graduates outside the USA and Canada can take the USMLE. Registration is done through ECFMG's online services on the official USMLE website.

There are three steps in the USMLE: 

  • USMLE Step 1: Examines fundamental scientific concepts and knowledge. 

  • USMLE Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge) evaluates how well medical knowledge is applied to patient care. 

  • The last exam for doctors taking on independent duty for providing healthcare is the USMLE Step 3. 

USMLE can be taken:

  • Prometric testing facilities for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK are situated in major cities worldwide. 
  • In the US, the USMLE Step 3 must be completed. 

  1. USMLE authorization for scheduling. 
  2. A?legitimate government photo ID, ideally a passport. 

Four attempts are allowed for each USMLE Step.

Match is the process by which medical students match with Residency programs. Match is based on the results of the USMLE, as well as other factors such as letters of recommendation and personal statements.

International medical graduates must first obtain ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) certification in order to practice medicine in the United States. Participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), which pairs residency programs with graduates, is required.
